Walks

The Woodland Walk

The circular Woodland Walk starts beside the pay booth and ends at the gate of the Walled Garden.

The Walk was created in 1999 from an area that was the north end of Hornsea Mere one thousand years ago. On the Walk is a small lake, a remnant of Hornsea Mere.  The Wetland and Stumpery are also part of the Ancient Mere and were created with the help of a Lottery Grant in 2016.   The walk takes you through The Arboretum, where the existing collection of indigenous and specimen trees has recently been extended by the planting of a collection of new trees.   As the Arboretum, along with The Wetlands and The Stumpery  is to be used by schools for educational purposes it too was eligible for assistance from The National Lottery.

The Lady Wall

Opening in 2021, the Lady Walk is a circular route around the Grounds of the Hall. Starting from the day visitors’ Gate of the Walled Garden, the path runs through a small wooded area until it reaches the main gravel drive of the Hall.   Turn right and Lady Walk continues in an anti-clockwise direction, passing the front of the Hall and the semi-circular flower beds. Enjoy view the view of Hornsea Mere before passing the the Hydrangea bed, finishing on the main drive.

The Half Mile Walk

This is a circular walk that skirts Wassand Park land. Starting at the western side of Wassand Hall and returning to the Hall on the eastern side. The walk has a pleasant vista of the Hall and Hornsea Mere.

Towards the end of the walk there is a newly planted Hydrangea bed with many unusual varieties.

This walk is not included in Garden Days

The Bird Hide Walk

Starting at the Car Park this goes along a public footpath and then through an ancient wood to Hornsea Mere. The Hide provides excellent vistas across the Mere with a great richness of waterfowl and birds.

The Bird Hide, entrance to which is included in the All Day ticket, is open throughout the year (see details) to members of the Wassand Wildlife Society, closed only on Christmas Day.
