FAQ about Education at Wassand Hall

What is at Wassand Hall?
Wassand Hall Estate has woodland, ponds, a walled garden and a bird Hide. It is home to many different varieties of trees, plants and animals. The Education facility uses a large room in the Stables, the stallion yard and the woodland depending on the workshop.

How many children can come on the visits?
We usually have classes of between 25 and 40, it depends on the activity. Our Stone Age shelter building will accommodate up to 40 children. The least number we have is 20, this is to cover the costs of running a workshop.

Who looks after the children?

The children are always the responsibility of their School Staff; however, the Education Warden will lead the group. If any disruptive behaviour occurs the warden will mention this to the child. If this behaviour becomes too disruptive, we would expect the teacher in charge to speak to the child.

At lunchtimes the class will be taken to a suitable place to have lunch, either on the main lawn, the stallion yard or in the education room, this depends on weather and time. The education warden will then set up for after lunch activities. In case of emergency the EW can be contacted by mobile. Some schools bring along balls or a parachute to use at lunchtime as we do not have play equipment.

If the group is split into two smaller groups (one group led by the EW another group led by volunteers) we would expect the School Staff to supervise behaviour.

The toilets are within easy reach of all these places – children should be taken by members of staff.

On arrival one member of staff will be shown where the toilets are. See map.

When can we come for a pre visit?

Pre-visits can be arranged by contacting the Warden on education@wassand.co.uk

We try to accommodate teachers as much as possible as we feel that a pre-visit can add to the experience of the children.

What courses do you do?

Our brochures give an outline of workshops that we deliver but we are always open to tailoring to the needs of your class. Please feel free to ask if we can include aspects of the curriculum that you are covering in the classroom.

The courses can be altered depending on the time of the year, our story planning workshops for example include a story about migrating birds which can only be taught in the Spring and Summer.

Our planning can be sent to you once a deposit has been paid.

What Risks should I be aware of?

At Wassand Hall we try to make children and staff aware of any risks on the estate. As soon as the children arrive the EW gives a short talk about managing their own risk, e.g. looking where their feet are and washing hands.

We have also produced an In-house risk assessment which will be sent out once a deposit has been paid.

How do we book?

Contact the Education Warden on education@wassand.co.uk with dates that you would like to book. Bookings are usually taken for Tuesdays and Thursdays but other days are available.

Once a deposit has been paid you will receive the following (via email)

  • Booking Form – please reply and fill in asap.
  • In House Risk Assessment.
  • Invoice for the balance.
  • Itinerary (with planning if requested).

Can we take photos?

We think it is great when schools post photos of Wassand onto social media, our link is @wassandhall

Unfortunately, photos cannot be taken in the Hall.

What should we wear?
It all depends on the weather. We would always recommend strong shoes or wellies and a waterproof jacket in case of rain. Hats and sun cream in the Summer.

If you have any more questions please contact education@wassand.co.uk
